Saw Silent Hill tonight

I thought the movie was VERY good. There were parts which were a bit too gory… but it was a horror movie. All in all it’s the best horror movie I’ve seen in a long time. I recommend it.

What I dont recommend is going and seeing the movie with the 8 people who randomly sat in front of us. Every 30 seconds it was f**** this/that or oh f**** or sh** or any number of other curse words… annoying to say the least. Once we got the manager in to talk to them, though, they quieted down and my Wife and I got to enjoy the last 3/4 of the movie in peace.

Cheers

The brain is an amazing thing

It’s really amazing, when you stop to think about it. Try this little experiment: Go for a drive and spot all the traffic signs that you can find.

First, notice how long after you looked at each sign it took for your brain to realize it was a traffic sign. I bet that each recognition took an amount of time so small as tobe nearly unmeasurable.

Second, notice how many signs you saw. Different sizes, shapes, colors, words, meanings.

The point of this experiment is to bring a stark appreciation to the amount of data that you can process, visually, as well as the speed with which you store and retrieve dat. It’s truly amazing that you can distinguis these different objects, which have nothing physical in common just an abstract meaning and so readily classify them.

If you are still looking at me blankly, try this: write down a set of instructions that a 2 year old could follow to determine whether anything visual is a traffic sign in any condition. Just try and account for Stop, Yeild, Street Name, No parking, Carpool, Highway migh markers, no stopping, no parking, u turn, no u turn, right turn only, and those signs which are painted on the ground which are innevitably half covered in rubber… You begin to see the complexity of the situation now? Begin to appreciate how easily your brain can classify such data so readily?

It’s really quite fantastic!

w00t!

My camera *DOES* have a single-button-multi-photo mode! I figured out how to access it… sometimes… now to *UNDERSTAND* it… but… baby steps… I now know I have one!

VICTORY!

After plunger, draino, simple green, and another industrial strength degreaser, I finally dealt the killing blow to our backed up drain!

On the outside of the house, matching the part of the wall where the sink is, there was a plug. I unscrewed the cap, and inplugged it. A bunch of water (from the sink) came rushing out. About 1 inch inside the pipe i’d just opened up there was an intersecting pipe leading down. I got my cordless drill and my auger attachment. And after all 15′ (mine may have been 25′) of auger I finally unclogged my drain… pulled out some gunk that mush have gone down the disposal by accident, and theres some real nasty grease down there too… but it’s flowing again! YAY.

Deadly chemicals: 0 clogged drain: 1

So the serious burn/death chemical didnt to any better that the simple green which didnt do any better than the draino which didnt do any better than the plunger… so…

I took notes the last time the roto-reuter dude was out here last time, and I know where the valve on the outside of the house that i can open and snake from is… so… I’m going to try that… tomorrow…

Clogged Drain Part 2: Drain V.s. Simple Green Degreaser

No dice on plunging or Draino. The clog isnt in the U, so it’s down deep… Next step: Simple green degreaser. I’ll let you guys know how it goes. As a backup I have a bottle of degreaser with warnings on it like “Fatal if swallowed” and “will cause serious burns to skin”. I like environment friendly
solutions, but, I like an unclogged drain more.
More in a couple hours.

Stopped up sinks

Bah! now this is one thing that really gets me…A stopped up sink. Just sucks. The big question is what can you do after trying draino and before spending $140 for a plumber…
hmm… something to ponder

Ahh, back home again

Back home from the inlaws… Unfortunately I tried to read in the passenger seat on the way up… I still get motion sickness… Now I know, and knowing is half the battle!

Anyhow. It’s *still* great to be back… even with an upset tummy.

puppy play dates

Since we’ve gotten our puppy son my wife and I ahve become quite the budding dog enthusiasts. We’ve been taking him to the dog park in fremont as often as possible; and as concerned parents we’ve been paying close attention to everything. One thing that we’ve noticed is that puppies have friends and BEST friends. Our puppy ESPECIALLY likes to play with Dancer, and Sinbad to name just two. This got me thinking (as things usually do) about how to give back to the doggy community AND make life better for myself. I got around to coming up with an idea for a web service

You create profiles for your pets, participate in discussions, and actively keep a schedule of your dog plans. This allows you to check up and see when your puppies favorite pals will be at the park next and meet up with them.

Of course that wouldnt be the limit of what you could do, or how it could strengthen the community. Assuming that if I build it they will come. And if it were made universal enough (and I have enough experience with large scale web apps to make it so) it could be made to, without any special work, be usable by any group of enthusiasts in any area of the country (world)

Could be big. I’ll chew on the thought some more.

Cheers

Bad router, BAD!

So, in noticing general trends, I seem to have uncovered an (in retrospect) obvious link between cheap routers, port forwards, and network disconnects.

It seems that, on a cheap router, if you have X port forwards you are increasingly likely to have random disconnects and such (especially with wifi) as X increases…

so if your internet throughput is crappy. you’re experiencing ertratic ping times, and getting lots of crappy disconnects… try removing all your port forwards… seems to9 really work. My best guess is that theres just not enough cpu/ram to maintain the tcp stream states.
